The Department of Agriculture – Batanes Experiment Station (DA-BES) has recognized outstanding farmers and fisherfolk from various municipalities in Batanes, as part of the conclusion of the Farmers and Fisherfolks’ Month Celebration.
Farmers and Fisherfolks’ Month is an annual observance every month of May to honor the contributions of agricultural workers to the country’s food security and economy. Here, various government agencies conduct a series of activities in celebration.
A total of 75 farmers, fisherfolk, local officials, agricultural stakeholders, and partner agencies have attended the culminating activity in Batanes.

Moreover, 47 awardees and finalists were recognized across 14 categories to honor the exemplary performance, innovation, leadership and dedication in fields crop production, livestock raising, fisheries, food processing, youth engagement, and agricultural governance.
The recognition is aimed at providing attribution to individuals and organizations whose efforts continue to strengthen local food systems and contribute to sustainable development of the agri-fisheries sector in the province.
“It likewise highlighted the vital role of agricultural producers and fisheries stakeholders in ensuring food availability and promoting resilient local livelihoods despite the challenges posed by geographic isolation, changing climatic conditions, and limited production resources,” DA-BES has said.

Awards covered: Most Outstanding Sweet Potato Farmer, Garlic Farmer, Vegetable Farmer, Rice Farmer, Corn Farmer, Small Ruminant Raiser, Large Ruminant Raiser, Poultry Raiser, Swine Raiser, Young Farmer/Fisher, Food Processor, Farmers’ Cooperative/Association (FCA), and Municipal Agriculture Office Head.
Government officials who took part in the culminating activity, on one hand, have emphasized on the indispensable role of farmers and fisherfolk in ensuring food security, sustaining local economies, and preserving agricultural traditions and cultural heritage in the island province.
Moreover, they have underscored on the importance of sustainable collaboration among national agencies, local government units, and farming and fishing communities to promote climate-resilient, sustainable and inclusive agri-fisheries development. #
