Angara underscores teachers, tutors’ role in achieving grade-level proficiency

Education Secretary Sonny Angara has commended the important role educators and tutors play in helping learners achieve grade-level proficiency, this as the government agency starts rolling out the 2026 Summer Remediation Program (SRP).

“Sa bawat batang umaangat, may mga guro at tutor na nagtitiyaga at naglalaan ng oras. Kinikilala natin ang sakripisyong ito. Kaya kasabay ng SRP at ARAL ay ang patuloy na pagtiyak na ang ating mga guro at tutors ay suportado, nirerespeto at inaalagaan,” he said.

The DepEd Secretary has said that through interventions such as the SRP and Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning (ARAL) Program, the government helps in learning recovery and address gaps in foundational skills – per directive from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

SRP will focuses on reading and mathematics subjects for learners from Grade 2 to 11 as preparation for the incoming school year.

ARAL, meanwhile, is a more structured and targeted approach through tutors which comprises of teachers, para-teachers, pre-service teachers, and volunteers; alongside other remediation efforts.

In the former school year, DepEd has recorded millions of learners who have shown improvement in literacy and numeracy skills.

While there are improvement, the agency is still putting in efforts in maintaining and improving gains on higher grade levels, and challenges in mathematics, as well as higher-order thinking skills like analysis and application.

Then-senator Sonny Angara has helped in making stronger policies and legislative efforts to strengthen foundational skills, which includes the creation of RA 12028 or ARAL Program Act.

DepEd said that learning recovery needs cooperation and persistence in implementing policies to ensure that recorded improvement in learning needs of the learners will bring lasting results. #
