DepEd rolls out digital consultation in remote schools

Children suffering from illnesses or problems needing medical attention in remote areas may have trouble finding access to a physician, but the Department of Education has created a ‘digital na lunas’.

Digital solution referred here is the Assisted Video Consultation (AVC) Room which provides a digital telehealth solution to ensure that students and their family has access to immediate medical attention.

The technology uses Starlink satellite internet, television, digital tablet and medical software. In other words, residents from the area would just go to the school’s AVC room for consultation.

Through the telemedicine program, and consultation with a physician is needed, they simply need to turn on their gadget and can communicate with a licensed medical doctor for assistance.

The initiative is made with the assistance of Project GIDA which focuses on helping communities on geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.

The program was recently rolled out in a remote community in Mayantoc, Tarlac where around 279 students has to travel 24-kilometers passing through mountains in order to have medical consultation.

For the students of Labney Integrated School and the community, they are grateful for the program, which saves not only their health but also their education.

Lorie Nicolas, a student, disclosed that she feels left behind during class discussions when she’s sick.
