Google drops free storage to 5GB, but will make it 15GB if verified with phone number

One of the prime reasons why online users would opt signing-up for a GMail account over other e-mail providers is the free storage option provided by Google.

Google is generous to provide 15GB free storage for every individual simply by creating an account with them, but the company has reportedly made modifications on its policy.

Manila Shaker has disclosed that some users now reportedly received only 5GB free storage, but Google provides an option to unlock the full 15GB of storage at no additional cost – that is through verifying the account with a phone number.

A screenshot shared on Reddit, per Android Authority, shows that while signing up, the tech company will initially provide 5GB.

“Your account includes 5 GB of storage. Now get even more storage space with your phone number for Google Photos, Drive, and GMail,” text on the screenshot says. But a user can click an option which reads, “Unlock 15 GB storage at no cost by using your phone number.”

While the story of the lower free storage has made rounds on social media, it is still hard to speculate whether the company is running A/B test in certain regions as it did not release an official statement yet.

On the official website of Google (PH version), the company says all Google accounts come with 15GB of storage.

Users can also sign-up for higher storage tiers of 30 GB, 100 GB, 2 TB, and 5 TB. Price ranges from P490/year to P10,900/year.

The highest plan displayed on the site is the Google AI Pro which comes with 5TB total storage, Gemini app with 3.1 Pro & limited access to Veo 3.1, Flow with higher access to Veo 3.1, Notebook LM with higher access, along many benefits.
