Hearing stories of Filipinos excelling and gaining recognition abroad, particularly in academics, is a source of pride not just for their families but for the entire Philippines.
Perhaps, the proudest would be the parents followed by the entire Filipino community. Such the case after a Filipina earns magna cum laude at Law School in UK university, and her mother was ecstatic about it.
Filipino students often face unique challenges when studying abroad, which can make excelling in school more difficult. These challenges stem from cultural, financial, and emotional factors, as well as differences in academic systems.
Some foreign universities have more rigorous academic standards compared to local institutions. Transitioning from a lecture-based system to a more research-intensive or participatory style of learning can be challenging.
Aside from these, you also gave to consider the following: financial constraints, emotional and mental health challenges, and family and peer expectations.
Despite these hurdles, many Filipino students thrive abroad due to their resilience, strong work ethic, and adaptability. Building supportive networks, seeking help from mentors, and balancing responsibilities are key strategies that help them succeed.
Take, for example, Seraphim Gerella, who proudly shared that his daughter, Maria Maxene Marcos Gerella, excelled in her Bachelor of Laws program in the United Kingdom.
Proud parents, Engr. Seraphim S. Gerella and Gigi Lyn M. Marcos, together with the entire Barangay Calaylayan community in Abucay, Bataan, are celebrating their daughter’s remarkable achievement.
Maria Maxene Marcos Gerella graduated with Honours – Class II Division I (Upper Second Class, equivalent to Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom.
The commencement exercises were held last July 5, 2024.
Maria Maxene’s journey to success started at Doha British School in Qatar, where she received the Principal Award, equivalent to Valedictorian, in the International Baccalaureate program.
She also ranked in the top 1% globally in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE).
She is now building her career as a Paralegal with the National Health System (NHS) in Leeds City, UK.
