DepEd teachers learn new teaching approaches, community-based education iniatives from South Korea

Filipino teachers have learned new teaching approaches and community-based education initiatives after taking part in an exchange program with the South Korean government.

The educators are part of the Korea-Philippines Teacher Exchange Programme (KPTEP), jointly implemented by DepEd and the South Korean Ministry of Education in partnership with the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding.

Master Teacher II Raleigh Ojanola has shared that as he witnessed the Korean education system, he realized that he needs to go back to serve the Filipino community and enlighten the learners “so they too can become successful.”

The teacher from Koronadal National Comprehensive Senior High School was also encouraged to strengthen literacy efforts in his own community after returning to the Philippines.

This realization has brought the creation of Project TULAY – a reading intervention program which integrates Global Citizenship Education concepts into localized reading materials.

Kristine Cruz, meanwhile, has said she learned in the best practices which Philippine schools can apply in the educational system to enhance and eventually help the system.

“We have this thinking now that we are not just Filipino teachers, we are global teachers,” the teacher from Malabon National High School has said.

Cruz has later launched a school clubs festival focusing on Global Citizenship Education and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Moreover, she has helped organize an online cultural exchange classes between her students and a South Korean partner school.

The exchange program seeks to strengthen intercultural understanding and educational collaboration between Filipino and Korean educators.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara has said that the program aims to strengthen teacher development through international partnerships which could improve the country’s educational system.

“Through international cooperation programs like this, we can equip our instructional leaders with world-class competencies that directly benefit our learners,” Angara said.
