The Department of Education or DepEd reiterates 5 unique Filipino Christmas traditions – customs we need to practice and be proud of.
Truly, aside from having the longest Christmas season, Philippines has so many amazing things to be proud of during said holiday.
As a song goes: “May tatalo pa ba sa Pasko ng Pinas?”
Aside from having the longest Christmas season, Filipinos are also known for the traditions that bring color and joy to the holiday season.
It seems that the long preparations leading up to December 25 have become an integral part of the Filipino way of celebrating Christmas.
The brightened streets and decorations in every home stand as witnesses to how the unique essence of a Filipino Christmas has been passed down through generations.
Unique Filipino Traditions
Thus, the Department of Education (DepEd) highlighted several unique Filipino traditions that remain an essential part of every Christmas celebration.
Hanging of the Parol
First on the list is the hanging of the parol (Christmas lantern), inspired by the star or the great celestial light that guided the three wise men to the manger where the newborn Jesus lay.
It is said to be one of the most iconic Christmas decorations, symbolizing hope and generosity for Filipinos.
Simbang Gabi
Next is attending Simbang Gabi (Night Masses), which runs from December 16 to 24.
It is said that completing all nine masses allows one to make a wish, with the possibility of it being granted.
Of course, after Simbang Gabi, people look for something to eat along the streets, with puto bumbong and bibingka being the most sought-after Christmas delicacies that many truly crave.
Family Reunions
During Christmas parties and on Christmas Day itself, reunions are marked by the exchange of gifts in various forms; some opt to give cash instead.
Noche Buena
And of course, the celebration of Noche Buena at midnight on December 25 is a tradition that never fades. Regardless of the food served, a festive gathering of family members is always expected.
Exchange of Gifts
This is also when exchange gifts take place, or for some, when they open the presents they received, which are often displayed under the Christmas tree.
