The Department of Education (DepEd) in Western Visayas has convened teachers and other staff to level-up their knowledge and competencies in the upcoming three-term school calendar, May 8 at the City of Passi Arena, Passi City, Iloilo City.
Assistant Secretary for Learning Systems Strand Dr. Jerome T. Buenviaje has said that the transition to the new system may initially pose challenges but noted the importance of patience, adaptability, and collaboration among education stakeholders.
Starting June, schools particularly public will adopt a new school calendar structure where the school year will be divided into three terms, which consists of opening block, instructional block, and end-of-term block.

Opening block will focus on learner profiling, readiness assessments and initial school preparation while instructional block will focus on dedicated to uninterrupted, continuous teaching and learning to ensure curriculum targets are met.
End-of-term block, on one hand, is reserved for academic intervention, consolidation of lessons and professional development for teachers.
School year 2026-2027 will consist of 201 school days, with term 1 consisting of 69 days, term 2 with 65 days, and term 3 with 67 days.
“There will be adjustments at first, but things will get better,” Dr. Buenviaje said.
He emphasized, number of school days remain the same: “The number of school days compared to the four-term school calendar is the same, just placed in different baskets. It is just like a book with four bookmarks – if I move one bookmark, the book is still the same.”

Education Secretary Sonny Angara has said, earlier, that the shift is a strategic move to improve the continuity and effectiveness of teaching across the country’s public school system.
“The objective is to ensure that learning is delivered in a more organized and consistent manner throughout the school year,” he said.
The development of the three-term calendar has undergone extensive consultations at the national, regional, and school levels, involving teachers and school heads.
The government agency is currently conducting nationwide orientation sessions for Regional and Schools Division offices.
