Globe and TM subscribers may soon be able to experience direct-to-cell technology in browsing the internet, thanks to a partnership with Elon Musk’s company Starlink.
This is after some GCash users have spotted two Globe Starlink promo packs in the e-wallet that can be availed soon by the telecom company’s subscribers. These are Globe Starlink 99 and Globe Starlink 299.
Globe Starlink 99 comprises of 100 texts and 2GB satellite data access to essential applications, valid for 30 days. Globe Starlink 299, meanwhile, has 500 texts and 10 GB satellite data access to essential apps, valid for 90 days.

Globe has, earlier this year, completed a live pilot test of Starlink’s satellite-to-mobile services in parts of Rizal, Batangas, and Bataan.
The telco has said that the pilot enabled SMS, app-based voice calls, navigation, e-government access, GCash transactions, and messaging services such as Viber and WhatsApp in areas without terrestial mobile coverage.
Satellite-to-mobile connectivity, such as Starlink, allows compatible smartphones to connect directly to satellites. This helps address inconsistent signal coverage in remote provinces, islands, mountainous areas, and disaster-hit locations.
Globe recommends that users have to turn on data roaming since using Starlink is technically similar to using your Globe SIM abroad.

Likewise, reports disclose that speeds offered by Globe’s Starlink promos ranges from 2 to 4 mbps. In other words, it is recommended to use the promo as back-up when navigating remote areas.
Globe has yet to disclose more details regarding the promo such as device compatibility, supported applications, coverage areas and official availability.
The move to satellite-to-mobile initiative could help the company move to nationwide mobile coverage, and is one of the first countries in Southeast Asia to commercially adopt the technology.
