Filipino teacher receives award from King Charles III

A Filipino education leader, who began his teaching career in a public school in Tarlac City before migrating to the United Kingdom, has received an award from King Charles III of the United Kingdom.

Edison David was awarded the prestigious Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE).

The medal was presented by His Royal Highness, the Prince of Whales (Prince William) on behalf of His Majesty King Charles III, during a royal investiture at the Windsor Castle on Wednesday, May 13.

David, likewise, has wore a bespoke barong coat from Lumban, Laguna – recognized as the “Embroidery Capital of the Philippines – which brought a distinct Filipino presence at the royal ceremony and reflected his pride in his roots.

The Filipino teacher said, “Receiving the MBE from His Majesty King Charles III was an extraordinary and deeply humbling experience. Wearing a barong from Lumban was especially important to me because I wanted to proudly represent Filipino heritage during such a significant occasion.”

He added that the recognition reflects the collective efforts of the schools, colleagues, pupils and communities he had worked with throughout his career – and as an inspiration to all Filipinos who make important contributions internationally.

MBE, the prestigious accolade, is given to individuals who have sustained commitment and service that have made a significant, long-term impact on their communities and fields.

David was recognized for his work as executive headteacher at Granton Primary School in Lambeth.

He has become executive headteacher at two Outstanding-rated primary schools in London’s Lambeth borough.

Under his leadership, the schools have achieved notable improvements in academic performance and community engagement, especially among disadvantaged pupils.

He has also helped in strengthening standards across the UK’s education system, serving as school improvement consultant, supports strategies to enhance teaching quality and foster inclusive learning environments.

In the Philippines, he is currently in talk with Department of Education for a collaboration on school benchmarking and sharing of best practices from leading schools in London. #
